Avro
Vulcan B2 XL388 of No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron at RAF Wyton in 1978. The
aircraft is parked on the operational readyness platform (ORP). Note the
lanyards that removed the ground power and telescramble leads as the aircraft
moved forwards. The elevated 'hut' behind the Red Steer radome is the
RVR (runway visual range) tower in which an unfortunate airman or airwoman
was incarcerated to report the visibility on the runway to the tower,
presumably by counting the distance to go boards.
