Vulcan B2 XL386 undergoing an engine ground run at Goose Bay in February 1979. 386 was delivered to IX Squadron in May 1962. In November 1963, 386 returned to the manufacturers at Woodford for conversion to a B2 Blue Steel and to be fitted with Olympus 301 engines (in the retrofit programme that encompassed the seven airframes XL384 to XL390), and was delivered to the Scampton (Blue Steel) Wing in August 1965. After conversion back to the free-fall configuration in 1969, 386 flew with 230 OCU at Scampton and was transferred to the Waddington Wing in 1977, being allocated to 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron in 1978. 386 served with 101 and 50 Squadrons in 1981 as the V-Force was run down.
