Avro
Vulcan B2 co-pilot's view of high-level cruise with the SFOM sight in
place. The sight was used for low-level bombing so the photograph is somewhat
contrived. No doubt a visual released was scheduled for later in the sortie.
SFOM is an acronym for Societé Francaise d'Optique et de Mechanique.
Were the sights robbed from Canberras? Harmonising the sights took all
day: the aircraft was jacked-up, the angle of attack measured using an
inclinometer in the main wheel bays, a mechanical tubular sight was bolted
in front of the windscreen and I recall a pendulum and starplate? in the
cabin; somehow some figures were extracted and the sight aligned.
