This is a well-used photograph of Avro Vulcan B2 Blue Steel XL384 over the Niagara Falls with a W103A Blue Steel training round. 384 was delivered to No 230 OCU at RAF Finningley in April 1962. It was withdrawn from service in August 1963 and returned to Woodford for reengining with Olympus 301 engines and conversion to B2 Blue Steel. It reentered service with the Scampton Wing in August 1964. In February 1970, 384 was converted back to free fall, reentering service with the Waddington Wing in June 1970. In November 1970, 384 was allocated to No 230 OCU at Scampton. In August 1971, 384 was damaged whilst landing at Scampton, ending up in the car park of Air Traffic Control. Though initially judged repairable, 384 was written-off and used as an instructional airframe.
