Avro Vulcan B2 MRR XH558 of No 27 Squadron in 1981. Five 27 Squadron aircraft were fitted with underwing mounts outboard of the Skybolt blisters that could carry air-sampling pods as seen in this photograph. 558 was the first B2 to be delivered to the RAF in 1960 where it served with No 230 OCU at RAF Waddington and later RAF Finningley. Transferred to the Waddington Wing in 1968, 558 was converted to a B2 MRR in 1973 and served with No 27 Squadron at RAF Scampton till 1982. For a short period, 558 was operated by No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron before being converted to a K2 single-point tanker and flown by No 50 Squadron. 558 acquired fame by being the last Vulcan to fly being used by the Vulcan Display Team (having been converted back to a B2) until it was retired in March 1993. Presently 558 is being restored at Bruntingthorpe. Identification courtesy Craig Bulman, author of The Vulcan B.Mk2 from a Different Angle >>
