Avro Vulcan B1A XH502 of the Waddington Wing at the Compass Swinging Base circa May 1965. Peter Middlebrook remembers: "One of the fundamental inputs to the Vulcan nav attack system, was compass information. Therefore, great care was taken to “swing” the compass accurately. For the nav radar, this translated into hours and hours trudging round and round the compass base in all weathers, clutching a theodolite, while the plotter and co pilot sat down in relative comfort in the aircraft." |
