Vulcan B2 (MRR?) XJ823 with aircrew and groundcrew of No 35 Squadron at RAF Scampton in 1981. The Commanding Officer is Wg Cdr Ian Junor (seated centre behind the large trophy). XJ823 was delivered to No 27 Squadron at Scampton in April 1961 and transferred to No 35 Squadron at RAF Coningsby as 27 re-equipped with B2 Blue Steel aircraft. Long-resident on the Akrotiri Wing, 823 returned to the UK at Waddington with IX Sqn in 1975. From April 1977, after receiving MRR modifications (note the blade aerial forward of the static head in the position of the obsolete Blue Saga PWR aerials - left), 823 served with No 27 Squadron at Scampton. In its gloss MRR finish (as top), 823 was refitted with TFR and transferred to 35 Squadron in April 1981 and subsequently went to Waddington in 1982. The aircraft survives at the Solway Aviation Museum.
